I’m a journalist, writer and academic, who writes about philosophy, psychology and the search for the good life. My main area of interest for the last five years has been ancient Greek and Roman philosophies and how people use them in modern life. I’m interested in the direct relationship between modern psychotherapy (particularly CBT) and ancient Greco-Roman philosophy. I’ve written a book about this, Philosophy for Life and Other Dangerous Situations, which is being published in May 2012 by Rider Books in the UK, and by other publishers around the world.  There’s more information about the book on my website, www.philosophyforlife.org, where I blog regularly and list my upcoming events.

I am policy director at the Centre for the History of Emotions at Queen Mary, University of London, and write for the Centre’s blog.  At the centre, I am running an AHRC-funded research project into the rise of philosophy groups worldwide. If you run a philosophy group, get in touch. I’m also a member of the Centre for Contemporary Aristotelian Studies in Ethics and Politics (CASEP) at London Metropolitan University, and am on the International Committee for the Advancement of Rational Emotive Education.

I write a blog called Philosophy For Life, and send out a weekly column / newsletter to subscribers. I have also written on philosophy, psychology and the politics of well-being for The Spectator, The Times, Prospect, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, New Statesman, Psychologies, Open Democracy, the School of Life, the OECD, the Young Foundation, the New Economics Foundation, IPPR, the Franco-British Council, Global Dashboard, and the Rockefeller Foundation; and have spoken about philosophy on BBC Radio 4‘s Four Thought, and on BBC Radio 3’s flagship ideas programme, Night Waves.
